Sushi & Cupcake Bibs

But not as in sushi cupcakes...that would be gross, and weird, and even weirder to applique...

I was using this bib on Miss Kitty the other day (by the way, that's my new nickname for Sophie, not only does she knead me with her hands like a kitten but she meows constantly. Like REALLY meows. One of these days I'll post a video as evidence) anyway, I realized that cupcake bib is now 2 years old & you know what, it's held up pretty darn well. It along with the sushi one below are some of my first tutorials here on the ol' blog so I decided to re-post them since they're probably new to most of you. (that & Soph has a cold which = no sleep for mommy = no crafting = sadness) Below you'll find the patterns, bib assembly instructions & a quickie applique tutorial. Enjoy!

The bibs are made from quilting fat quarters & are backed in terry. To print the applique patterns just right click on the image below and print it full page.
Other than that you'll need...

1 terry hand towel
1 already existing bib that you like the size of (for making bib pattern)
1 fat quarter of main fabric
applique fabric
Wonder Under or Heat N Bond
velcro or snaps
sewing machine

1st let's create your bib pattern. You can do this by tracing an outline of a bib you own that you like the size and shape of. Add a 1/4" around the perimeter of the bib for seam allowance & cut out the bib front using this pattern.
Next cut out the applique shapes of whichever bib you're making. Be creative with what kind of prints you use, the more out of the box the better it sometimes comes out, for instance the "tuna" piece is actually a red floral...
Follow the directions of your interfacing for all of the applique pieces & go ahead and adhere them to the front bib piece.Next we'll cut out the terry backing, place your main bib piece face down onto a hand towel and pin into place. Cut around the bib and you'll have an already pinned backing ready to be sewn! (make sure the main bib and terry are right sides together) Sew around the perimeter leaving a 2" opening for turning. Trim off any excess around the seam paying special attention to clip off the excess corners near the top of the bib. This will help those corners to lay flat when you turn it right side out. After turning it right side out topstitch around the entire bib being sure to fold in the opening you left and stitching it shut.

Almost done! Use a zig zag or satin stitch around all of the applique's seams. I know some people like to use translucent quilter's thread so they don't have to keep changing colors but man did that make a big tangled mess of my machine when I tried it! So I just changed thread color for each piece. (I left the bobbin white though) You could also do this step right after you iron on the applique so the stitches are hidden underneath but I like to do it last so it goes through both layers of the bib and helps tack it all in place.
Last step is to either add snaps or sew on a small piece of velcro for a neck closure. Bon appetit!
