Junk Drawer Makeover

I'm bummed that I didn't get to post over the weekend, I have some fabric dye & men's undershirts calling my name for a Samster dress project I concocted but I just haven't felt up to it the last couple of days. A bit of a bug I suppose. Today I decided to keep taking it easy but do a small project so I could feel a little better about spending the majority of my day on the couch.

At the beginning of the year Centsational Girl did a few posts about organizing your home that totally got me motivated to de-clutter. I don't have time (or energy) to do my whole house (or even one whole room) at once but I figure if I do one drawer or closet a day it'll really start to add up. Today I decided to tackle my arch nemises...the junk drawer.ICK! This is where everyone dumps their junk & it drives me crazy when I have to find something like the charger cord for the monitor & I have to dig through a tangled mess. Even Samster contributes to the mess...But after a drawer organizer from IKEA and some repeating of "Do I need this? Do I LOVE it?" (another Centsational Girl tip) here's the result!YAY!!! Sigh, I just can't stop opening and shutting it, it's amazing what a little decluttering can do for your mood. In fact I just couldn't stop. Here's the next door drawer....before- every manual for every appliance we've ever bought and a slew of take out menus...And after there's actually room to spare!
Now I just couldn't stop...next, the "pen drawer". You know, that random place you go to find a pen, post-it or lighter? Before I could never find anything...And after! Those little plastics bins came from the $1 bin at target, you can also sometimes find them around the cosmetics/travel toiletries area. Hopefully they'll keep everything from rolling all around the drawer & mixing. Even the battery drawer looks better with a little organization...So there's my tidbit for the day. It's no crazy extreme makeover but I dunno, little things like this make me happy. I filled two trash bags with the un-necessities from those drawers a couple of cabinets & boy does it feel good to know all that junk is out of my house. Try doing one drawer next time you're waiting for the water to boil, you'll see how rewarding it can be. (Or I'm just an anal-retentive freak.)

  1. I'm with you. Over the last 2 weekends, we rearranged our entire apartment. When we moved in our son was 1, now at 2 1/2, the original configuration was no longer working. I always felt like my place looked cluttered. I was being pissy all the time because the place looked like I never cleaned, even after I just cleaned. Now, even when the kid's stuff is all over, it still looks cleaner because it's much more open. My husband has been making fun of me because I've been walking around on cloud 9. Organization just makes me happy!

  3. I've been doing this for the past 2 days. Today was my third day at going thru papers that have stacked up, magazines that have been piling up and excess papers that needed to be shredded and discarded. I've completely filled 4 kitchen garbage bags. Not bad huh? There is still lots to be done and a couple of shelves that still need cleaning but I am getting there.. Given myself a deadline of the end of the month to not overwhelm myself....

  4. My husband and I moved in our house in August and since then we have been remodeling. I have told myself nothing comes out of a box unless we have an exact location where it belongs. Everything that doesn't find a place gets sold or donated. Thanks for the reminder that it will just make my life easier in the end.

  5. I did that a few weeks ago too. It feels so good. Now, the challenge is actually keeping it up.!!!

  6. I definitely need to do this. Happy to know I'm not the only one with more than one unorganized drawer;) Thanks for the motivation!

  7. I've been doing the same thing. I organize things, but as life gets busy, we just go back to putting things where ever is convenient. Then I have to organize again.

  8. I absolutely need to do this, and let me tell you Ikea is my best friend! Where else can you go for an hour, drop your kids off in a well supervised, safe place they love, and then go shop around to find all kinds of cool stuff?

  9. One day I will get to our junk drawer. I have found that an old cheap utensil holder also works as a great organizer. Yay for clean drawers.

  10. That's such a good idea! I like that approach. If I just plan on doing one drawer at a time, or one "something" a day, it wont seem so overwhelming. And who knows, maybe I'll be on a roll like you and tackle 2 "somethings" a day. Love it!

  11. Totally inspiring! We have four junk drawers and that's just about three too many. I need to do this... one drawer at a time...
