That's how I feel about the lightbulb Christmas frame, project #5 in the "30 for $30" glitter series. *For those of you who are new to the blog (hi!) I'm doing a series of 30 glitter projects to justify the $30 price tag on Martha's FABULOUS Essential Glitter Pack, you can read more about it here or look for any post with the label "30 for 30".
I'm wondering if I should've stopped at the glitter & left off the bulbs. Hmmm, then again I do like how festive it is. Hmmm. Well, regardless, here it is!
You'll need: christmas tree replacement bulbs, 1 plain wood frame (these are $1 in the woodworking aisle at Michael's), white glue, spray gloss sealant, hot glue & Martha's glitter of course. (I used 'copper')
Begin by using a paintbrush to give a good coat of glue all over the frame. Don't forget the sides & inside edge.
Next (don't forget to work on a surface that you can pick up & redeposit glitter, I used a piece of freezer paper taped to the table) sprinkle liberally with glitter. After you shake off the excess & it dries a bit you can go back & fill in any holes.
Once completely dry give it a good coat of sealant. (Btw, don't be fooled by my 'low-odor' 'indoor safe' spray sealant. It STUNK.)
Next I used hot glue to attach the bulbs, I applied a dollop of the glue to the widest part of the bulb.That's it!
Sooo, what do we think? Be honest...but nice, I'm feeling sensitive these days. (;Samster & I are on our way to Florida today, wish us luck getting out of the airport. Daddy has to work so I'm solo with the toddler, again. Be brave Samster Mommy, be very brave.
I think I would have liked it better with fewer bulb colors. Maybe all blue or all blue and green. The idea itself is really cute, I just think all the colors make it really busy.

ReplyDeleteI was super excited about finding these frames last week for $1 (a bought a ton). But honestly not loving this craft- maybe the copper threw me off...?
ReplyDeleteIt's a sweet idea - maybe if you had done it like a strand of lights going around the frame? It's cute the way it is, but all those bulbs overwhelm the photo a little bit to me. :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it. Yes, it's a little gaudy, but in a "I love christmas THIS much" kind of way. And if you really hate it, make it a White Elephant gift next year!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I think a different color (maybe silver?) would've tied the different bulb colors together a little better, but it's still super cute!

ReplyDeleteIt's cute enough for the holiday... after the new year I would try to take the bulbs off and maybe add some pearls along the outer and inner boarder. It's still a cute project though.

Reading your blog is not helping my craft shopping addiction, but I can't stop myself anyway. Now I want some wooden frames and Martha Stewart Glitter (I was looking at it last week at Michael's with my baby).

ReplyDeleteI think a cluster of 3 bulbs in the bottom right corner would've been nice and maybe a word across the top, JOY or something...but that's just me - all those bulbs look like an accident waiting to happen w/my rowdy crew :) Cute idea!
