DIY Winter Sheers

Here were my kitchen window curtains for Fall...(You can find the tutorial for the painted mum window panels here)

And now winter simplicity... I took a pair of swiss dot IKEA sheers (I found them for $1 a panel two years ago & literally bought 20 of them, so far I've gone through about 1/2 my stash) & cut them to the length of my old panels that I had sewn. I think I'm going to use the leftovers to make a frou frou skirt for Samster...we'll see.Next I used Heat N Bond to attach a pretty silver/blue ribbon across the top hemline.Took all of 20 minutes during naptime & wah-lah! A quick but nice seasonal update.

Here's what else I got done today for the Samster household Christmas decorations...I didn't quite get around to putting pictures in the stocking frames. I am also torn as to how to put our names on the stockings. I don't feel like paying to get them embroidered, I'm not sure how well applique would look on velvet...not to mention cutting pretty script letters out of fabric sounds miserable. Maybe freehand with fabric paint? Any ideas? I really don't want to mess them up because I lusted after them from Pottery Barn last year & scooped them up after Christmas for 70% off. That was a GOOD day.

Here's my other question for you guys...we scored tickets to the National Christmas Tree Lighting tomorrow night at the White House. Pretty amazing, right? Bad news is it's going to be in the 30's & possibly rainy. And it's a 3hr long outside event. Brrrr. How do I bundle up Samster so she'll stay warm? Keep in mind we'll also be carrying her in a backpack so she can't have a giant puffy coat on. I normally wouldn't take her out in the cold for prolonged periods at night but I feel like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, no? I still consider myself a Florida girl even though we've been in D.C. for 3 years so any advice from you snowbirds would be much appreciated! I did buy this Colombia fleece bodysuit off the clearance rack at Nordstrom today but I'm not sure what she wears under it...

  1. You are so talented! I love how the mantel looks! Beautiful! It looks like, it should be in a magazine! Thanks for sharing all your ideas! They are all awesome :)

I had a snow suit like that for my girls. I put my girls in footy Jammie's, and also put a snow suit like that on them. That would be such an awesome thing to go see! Have a good time!! ~ Chrissy

  2. I'm not sure if I've ever commented on your blg before, but I've followed for a while now. I love all your crafts, and your daughter is beautiful!

What about a simple silver cord with just a one-letter initial for each stocking? This is the only picture I could find...looks a little yarn-like, but you get the idea.

  3. Oh oh! I know! My friend has silver letters hung on ribbon that hang on the hook with the stocking to know who's stocking is who's. She also has velvet stockings, green and gold. It's sooo easy and soooooo chic!

  5. Pretty stockings! You could try writing the names onto plain fabric and stitching that onto the stockings (that way you can try out how they'll look without making holes in your velvet). I made my kids calico (muslin) stockings which I decorated with cross stitch, applique and whatever I could dream up. I cross stitched their names straight onto the stockings. You have to have names!

  6. precious pictures!

I have been following your blog for a little while now, but never put 2 & 2 together that you were a FL girl in DC. We live in Northeast FL and my husband has just accepted a new job in Western MD, starting next week! We are excited, but I am sure I'm gonna miss 70ish temps in December. You will have to "school me" on how to dress the baby girl for winters up there ;)

I like the monogram ornament idea hanging over the stocking!

  7. I would put her in footie pajamas with a t-shirt underneath. You don't want her in too many layers underneath because she won't fit and she'll get too hot. Make sure her head and hands are covered and she should stay plenty warm.

Your house looks great and has motivated me to actually start decorating!

  8. I love the monogram ornament idea too! Might have to "borrow" that idea.

I agree with footed jammies under the suit. Do you have a hat with ear flaps? Maybe socks on her hands under mittens (most kid mittens aren't very warm IMO) You could also secure a blanket around her once she's in the carrier. Good luck. Post pics if you end up going.

  9. What about something like this for your stockings.

Just an idea. I am sure you could come up with something cute for the stockings!

  10. Hey Natasha, your house looks great...we haven't gotten the urge to haul the Christmas stuff out of the basement yet...maybe tomorrow! I saw a cute idea while I was blog-surfing for stocking monograms. I'm going to use this on my PB ones, because, like you, I don't want to mess then up! This is a cute idea and then Santa knows who's who! http://www.inthefunlane.com/

  11. I saw a tute on Martha Stewart for beaded wire initials. You just string tiny beads onto a wire and form it into the letter.

  12. I don't know if someone already suggested this but if you are looking for another reason to use your MS glitter but are worried about messing up the stockings, you could make cute fabric tags to hang from the stocking loops that have each of your names on them in glitter... just an idea
