Samsterita

Do you ever get halfway into a project and then reach a point where you're just not sure it's worth spending any more time finishing it? I'm usually way too stubborn to stop and then end up wasting another 3 hours trying to make something work that I should've put to rest awhile back.

In the effort of learning from my mistakes I'm going to pause my "ruffled rainbow fleece dress" project and get your input to help me decide if it's dead & gone or possibly still a hit.

Here's what I've got so far, keep in mind the ruffles would continue in that color pattern all the way down the dress. I also haven't stitched down any of them yet so they can be moved around.
My little sister Maggie's exact words were, "She'll look like a pinata."

Hmph.

  1. I was thinking more like the Spanish dancing girl dolls some people have on their dashboards. But, yeah, pinata, too.

  2. I think it has potential. I'd cut back on the colors, maybe just 2 or 3, and i'd have the waist lower, so there might be only 3 or 4 ruffles.it would no longer be a rainbow dress. Keep playing...looks like fun!

  3. I think it can go either way, but I agree. Less colors and/or less rows of ruffles will be good. Plus, a fleece material can add bulk and make samster a pinata!

  4. I think it is cute, but i like the suggestions above. 2 or 3 colors, start a little lower on the dress.

  5. I actually like all the colors, however instead of doing more ruffles I would just move them lower on the dress, like a drop waist and than continue them on to the bottom.

  6. Good call on the pause. I agree with the suggestinos of limiting the colors. How about 3 rows at the bottom of the dress and choose one of those colors to top the little cap sleeve?

  7. mm, just move the waste down. on another note...is this chic copying you or are you copying her? the leg warmer post on hers is identical to yours

  8. I think this will be cute if you pair it with some boots and a jean jacket top! I think you should lower the ruffles like the others have said. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

  9. Hmmm, well Oatbear, all I'll say is two things.

1- I did put it out there in my post that the socks to legwarmers tutorial has been done many many times & it was by no means my idea.
I hate, HATE, when people don't give credit where credit is due so if I didn't invent a tutorial I'll never act like I did. Promise.

    2- If you want to know which came 1st check the post dates. (;

That's all I should say about that before I write something I'll regret.

Thanks for the heads up though, even though it gets me all in a tizzy I do like to know when others are "copying".

    Deep breaths....

  10. I agree with moving the ruffles down... but I like all the colors... I think One of each would be good. I think it's cute! : )

  11. Maybe if the ruffles were a little longer but kept all the colors? I gotta be honest...I think it is absolutely adorable the way it is...I would dress my kid up in it.

  12. I would do 3-4 rows right along the bottom and leave it at that. Maybe a little flower or some other little decorative touch somewhere near the neckline, sort of like a brooch.

  13. I actually like it and when you put the tutorial up I'll making one fo myself, since I don't have a girl.

I'm the girl that loves sparkley things and ruffles so I'd totally rock this. Maybe in a jersey fabric.

But for Sams dress I think lighter colors would make it look less "pinata-ish"

  14. Her post did say she didnt know where she found it, so I left her a comment with a link to you saying I thought she had probably gotten it from you.

  15. I love the ruffles...my only suggestions is make them vertical!

  16. Hey Natasha-
I actually like how the ruffles are placed - I would just do two colors and make it more like a tunic shirt - then pair with some cute leggings! I think you could put a trash sack on the Samster and she would still look adorable! ha!

  17. It's an ADORABLE idea...but I'd limit the Ruffles. Maybe a few along the bottom, to equal about 5" of ruffle height, and then maybe some rosettes to hide the top of the last ruffle??

  18. ADORABLE!!! makes me wish I have a girl :)

  19. I think it's super-cute! Maybe because I have 3 boys and don't have the chance to indulge in girly stuff too much. I'd do one of each color (or maybe do 2 of a few colors?) and move them to the bottom of the dress. You're so creative...I'm still at the only-stealing-other-people's-ideas phase of my crafting!
