Poopsplosion in the Sky

Samster Mommy is brought to you from sunny Florida this week while we visit nana & pop-pop. Your jealous, I know, it's ok. (;

What you won't be jealous of? Our trip down here. 1st off any of you who have traveled with a baby know what an ordeal it is. When I fly with Sam alone the only way I can get through it is to be uber-organized. We've been doing it since she was 8 wks old & I thought I had it all down.

Properly packed diaper bag with snacks, dvds, a new toy...I'm like a machine getting through security too, liquids in the baggie, Sam in the sling, shoes coming off and laptop pulled out all in one swift movement. (ok, maybe not quite that graceful but go with me here...) Once we get to the terminal it's food, magazines & right before we board a diaper change & potty for mommy.

This time was no different, we settled in our seats and just when I heard the flight attendant say they were closing the doors I got a little whiff of something bad. Something very bad. And then I SAW the something bad coming through Sam's pants. I had a 5 alarm poopsplosion on my hands (uh, literally) & nowhere to go! I flagged down the flight attendant & asked her if I had time to change Sam, she said she didn't think so & I said, "For the sake of everyone on the plane, I really need to change her!" She gave me a few baggies & I tried my best to carry the poop-leaking baby down the aisle and into the airline bathroom (closet).

"Ugh" doesn't even begin to cover it. Once I was changing her and realized there was NO way I could put her pants back on & in all my "uber-organized" planning I had forgotten to put a spare outfit in the diaper bag I wanted to cry & laugh out loud all at the same time. I mean, this was tv comedy stuff. In the end I did get her cleaned up and took her back to our seats trailor park style...shirt, diaper, socks & shoes. I got some dirrrrrty looks though & I just wanted to stand up and tell everyone, "Look, she had pants on when she got on the plane, I took her to the bathroom & now she doesn't have pants on. You do the math!" but I didn't, I just did my best to keep a blanket on her lap and keep her happy. When I got off the flight an older woman stopped to tell me what a good mom I was, that made my day.

Yet another addition to the Samster Mommy poopsplosion chronicles!

Daddy missed out on the whole experience and also is missing Samster big time so I sent him this little photo storybook last night...

  2. I'm sorry, but I had to laugh. And you are a GREAT mommy!!!! I'm sure she didn't need her pants in Florida anyway.

  3. Yes that is a mommy's worst nighmare-This happened to us on our way back from Mexico (after we were already on the plane). Those bathrooms are tiny and impossible to change a 1 year old in. I am impressed with your ability to travel alone with her. Good job.

  4. LOL! That's too funny! Babies know how to time things perfectly, don't they? I remember one time I was at church and I had taken my little boy out to nurse him in a classroom during the main meeting. I nursed him on one side and then changed his poopy diaper to wake him back up. As I was nursing him again all of a sudden I felt the explosion. All up the back of his clothes. My diaper bag was back in the chapel with my Mom. I had to wrap him up, totally naked, in a burp cloth and walk in front of the entire congregation to get to my bag, we were sitting up close to the front. And then walk back out so I didn't have to change him in front of everyone. People must have been wondering what in the world was going on?

  5. LOL TOO Funny! At least you have the courage to take her on a plane. I so worry about if I could handle 2 kids on a plane and all the 100 what ifs?? You did great though! You ARE a good mommy!

  6. So hilarious! And, I promise you, we've all been there. My son did it when we were at a restaurant - of course I didn't have a change of clothes with us, AND it was December. We ended up walking out of the restroom like you, shirt, socks, shoes and diaper. To leave the restaurant I had to wrap my mom's coat around his legs so he didn't freeze to death.

  7. I've been following your blog for a few weeks now... my little girl is 1 month old (ah! too fast!) and I was wondering what you did with Sam when she was first born? I've always wanted to be a SAHM and now I think I'm going to be bored to tears lol!!! Is this the reason you got yourself into crafts??

  9. oiy. This is my life in about two weeks and I am terrified. It was so easy when Oscar was a baby, but now that he is one and so mobile, I think the 7 hour flight might kill me.

  10. Oh my goodness, what a great story!! For sure, one for the scrapbook!!! My daughter is 2 and I am still not brave enough to fly! We drove 20 hours to FL last summer because of this! Enjoy your time, and hope you feel better soon!

  11. That is an awful poop episode. Last time I flew my 5 year old was great but my 2 year old screamed the 2 flights to our destination. Because of turbulance the flight attendant wouldn't let me stand/walk with him. He eventually fell asleep in the aisle face planted on the carpet. Disgusting but he was quiet. I was so surprized no one gave me dirty looks. I don't plan on flying for a long time! Have fun in warm Florida!
