Crewcuts Knockoff: Sequin Holiday Tee

I'm totally in love with this project, like truly madly deeply will end up driving past your house stalking you in love...

JCrew Version $32.50
Samster Mommy Version $3***I originally created this project for howdoesshe.com, it's a great mommy site so if you have some internet time set aside go check it out.

For this project you'll need: 1 permanent fabric marker, 1 package small sequins, needle & thread, t-shirt1st step- Draw the outline of the tie. One thing I really like about the original tee was how it wasn't a literal image of a tie, it's very hand-drawn looking which works out well for us! Don't stress about just going for it with the marker, just take your time & follow the outline below.
**if you're really worried about free-handing the tie then you can draw it first with a water-soluble fabric pen whose ink disappears with a bit of water. If you like what you see then draw over it with the permanent marker.
(I was using the image I had snapped in the store to draw mine)

2nd step- Sew on your 1st sequin. Do this by pulling your thread through the shirt & then back down through the hole of the sequin.final step- Keep sewing those little suckers on. For the 2nd sequin through the last you'll do the same thing, bring your thread up through the shirt & then down through the hole of the sequin. I believe proper sequin sewing etiquette would be to layer the next sequin over the first so it covers up your previous sequin's thread, they should also be sewn on in nice, neat little lines. For this tee however I think a bit messy & random is the way to go. Once again, it's what makes it kind of fun & casual for a kid's tee.So that's it! A final step that isn't necessary but might be a good idea is to use some light weight iron-on fusible interfacing on the inside of the shirt, it's that stuff you see on the inside of kid's tees to keep the applique design from scratching little ones' skin. In this case it will keep your little one from snagging any the threads that are holding together all of your hard work.

Now just go find yourself a Christmas party to crash!

  4. THANKS SO MUCH for posting this! I am on strict bed rest right now for the remainder of this pregnancy and I've been so bummed that most of my crafting requires me to sit up and at the sewing machine. Now I have something AWESOME I can do from my bed!

  5. uh, yeah, if you see a silver pathfinder driving by your house really slowly, that's totally definitely not me being a creeper over this shirt. I want one in my size. Actually I want one for every member of my family including the husband, all covered in cheeeeeesey and love.

  7. Samster is such a cute little model!!

I wanted to ask if you had ever heard of freecycle? It's an awesome place for freebie stuff and people are always offering fabric, sewing material-all sorts of stuff you could use for all these cute things you make : ) You can also offer things to give away that you don't want anymore. Someone mentioned it to me years ago, so I thought I would just let you know about it in case you can benefit from it. :)

  8. Ok, I am THISCLOSE to trying to make one of these for my unborn child, and we don't even know the gender yet! I think I like yours better than the Crewcuts version...the gold sequins are fantastic.

It WOULD look unbelievably cute on a onesie!

  12. I have an adult sized t-shirt with a sequined black lab on it that I probably paid $30 for at Eddie Bauer a year or so ago. With this technique down, the possibilities are endless for sequined shapes on t-shirts. Though I would probably avoid sequin-ing onesies as a potential choking hazard.

  14. This is great!! I am going to send this link to a couple friends with girls. I have boys so this wouldn't work with the sequins. Maybe something else?

  17. Such a great idea! I bet you think I had fallen off of the earth....well almost. Life had gotten the better part of me lately and I boycotted the internet for awhile. (I have to confess it was really nice to be internet free.) Anyways...back to your blog. I love the price tag for your version! :-)
