I've always had this problem but with a big ol' preggers belly it's worse times 10. I'm constantly tugging at the tank under my dress...that's where I came up with this little idea...
(I'm not about to model what's basically a glorified sports bra for ya so my duct tape dress form will have to do...with a tutu of course, just because.)
And under what would otherwise be a "welcome to the boob show dress"....Here's how I did it. You're gonna die when you see how easy it is.You'll need: 1 tank top, 1 piece of elastic long enough to fit around your rib cage. (mine was 1/2" wide)First, cut the tank top 13 & 1/2" from the top. (you can adjust this if your tata's are particularly large or small...try on the tank if you'd like & just mark where it stops under your bust)Next stitch the two edges of your elastic together, being careful not to twist, so you have one big loop. (stitch several times back & forth to make sure it's a good hold)
Last step, working from the inside of your tank fold the unfinished edge of your tank up & over the elastic loop & stitch into place. You're basically creating a casing for the elastic as you go...covering it up & stitching the casing shut. (I used a zig-zag stitch because it's good for stretch fabric since it has a bit of stretch itself, also be careful not to stretch the tank as you sew otherwise it'll come out wonky)
THAT'S IT! Seriously, you're done. I know, right? Pretty darn great.
Great idea! Love the dress!! But did the makers of that dress seriously think that anyone's tatas would stay in it without falling out?!
ReplyDeleteI love this post. I have a ton of tanks that roll up (I am not mentioning if I have a muffin top or not) :)
ReplyDeleteI am doing this with my tanks now. Much better than a sports bra that will squish what I have and I can wear my push up bra underneath.

Awesome! It would be useful for nursing too, only having to juggle one shirt instead of two layers.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! All my maternity dresses/shirts require tanks underneath, not all of us double in size on top. And it's too hot to be sporting 2 shirts every day. Hmm, wonder how many should I make?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Great Idea. I often layer a little t-shirt or cap sleeved shirt under summer dresses, but I have an hourglass figure and my shirts all end up rolling up to my waistline and bunching up. I'm going to try this!
ReplyDeletePerfect!! I am super self-conscious about accidentally flashing skin, so I wear tanks and camisoles under pretty much everything. But especially since it's so dang hot here, this would be a way better option. Now I just need to find some good-looking tanks to saw in half. ;)
ReplyDeletePS - What about "DIY Half-Cami for Layering"? I almost didn't open this post, but my curiosity over what a "tank top bra" is got the better of me. ;)
Love this... what a brilliant idea!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea! I am forever pulling at my tank tops under my shirts/dresses!
ReplyDeleteI LOVEEE IT! And if that is you in the pictures modeling it under the black dress you look fantastic!!!
ReplyDeletewonderful idea and you look great!!! a little belly...so cute!!
ReplyDeleteawesome!
ReplyDeleteYes! I totally have a ton of nice shirts I dont wear because they show a little too much! time to buy a few extra tanks this weekend!! =]
ReplyDeleteBrilliant idea!
ReplyDeleteI always have the riding up shirt issue and the unsightly extra lumps and bumps from all the layers.
I will have to give this a go!
:D
I love this Idea, My Muffin Top always gets the better of me, I am going to have to try this and see how it looks cause I love dresses and wearing them to work but sometimes I need extra coverage.
ReplyDeleteP.S.- Loving your Baby Bumb! You are very cute prego!
This is a great post. I usually just put a sports bra over my regular bra, but this is so much better! This is something so many women will appreciate because I'm sure we have ALL been there!
ReplyDeleteOh, and can I just say, how stinkin' cute are you?! That is such a sweet bump! :)
I love it! I have too many layers going on already, but this makes it a little simpler. And is that your belly in the photos? So cute! I hope everything is going well for you!! :-)
ReplyDeleteVery nice and simple. Your dress looks great with it... I can imagine that it would have been almost a x-rated shot without the tank top.
ReplyDeletegreat idea! is that a recent photo of the bump? looking good! i heard you/your husband on the radio this morning btw arguing about sleep with a baby. having a 6 week old, i am totally on your side, my husband thinks he never gets enough sleep when he wakes up maybe once a night and me about 3 times! =/
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good idea. And will be useful and very easy while feeding your baby :)
ReplyDeleteLove this idea. It is way too hot right now for two full layers. I've got 3 weeks to go and I feel like I'm roasting all the time. Thanks for the idea and you look totally cute preggers!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I have a ton of dresses that I can't wear alone for fear of showing too much skin. Can't wait to make one...or four!
ReplyDeleteHa! Genius. I need this (for the non-existent muffintop that NONE of us have, oh no)!
ReplyDeleteYou totally inspired me. I had a tank top that was annoying me because it was not long enough to layer, but was a shelf bra / covered up the ladies in cleavage showing shirts. So I sewed the top layer of the shirt onto the elastic on the shelf part and voila - perfect tank top bra.
ReplyDeleteI love that! And I especially love that you call the ladies "tatas!" I'm totally doing that...it's hilarious! Thanks for the great idea!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea. I'm going turn all my layering tanks into one of these - "half tanks."
