Now that it's springtime I'm torn as to what to dress Sam in. She has a ton of tanks and sundresses that it's not quite warm enough for & lots of fleece tops that it's a bit too hot for, that's when the clearance rack at JoAnn's sent me an answer. All of their super cute thermal prints were on clearance so I scooped up a bunch and set out to make Sam some waffle tee onesies!
They're super simple and oh so novice sewer appropriate. I started out by making a sleeve pattern from one of Sam's old shirts. I cut one up because the shirt was going to be tossed anyway but you can certainly just lay out a currently fitting tee.
Once you have the long sleeve pattern mark where the short sleeve of the onesie ends.
What's left is the pattern for your waffle sleeves, make sure when you lay your fabric down that it's folded in half along the side of the pattern that says 'fold'. This way you'll only have to stitch one side to make the sleeve tube.
Next you'll need to hem the end of the sleeve. Fold and pin about 3/4" in, then stitch. Be sure to reinforce your ending stitches by going in reverse a bit.
Next fold fabric in half with the right sides together. Stitch down side that way when you turn it right side out you have a finished sleeve. You can determine the width the tube by the pattern you made. Trim any excess if necessary before flipping right side out.One more step and you're done! All we have to do is attach it to the onesie. This was a bit tricky for me and I'm sure there are probably easier ways of doing it but here's what made sense in my brain...
Pin waffle sleeve to onesie lining up edge of waffle sleeve with hemline of onesie
Next find a comfortable to way to stitch the waffle sleeve on the inside of the onesie tee, be very careful that you don't accidentally stitch through both sides of the sleeve at the same time or your won't be able to fit an arm through the sleeve! For me I just very slowly fed the circle through the machine and kind of peeked in through the sleeve as I did it. Also be careful not to pull the fabric too taut, if you do your onesie sleeve might get stretched and pucker.Dress little one, go to the park and enjoy the cool sunny days before they get to be dreadfully hot!
Wow! You are so creative, I'm envious! I'm in the same situation with my little one and wish I had your talent and creativity.
